November 4th and 5th Power Failure Update

BC Hydro continues to face significant challenges with outages across Vancouver Island due to fallen trees on power lines resulting from severe winds. The most recent update for the Sayward region was November 4th at 21:41 (9:41pm), indicating a crew status as “suspended”.

The suspended status means that responding crews require additional equipment, poles or personnel in order to address the severity of the problem and that no crew is currently assigned to the Sayward outage.

BC Hydro has enlisted all available employees and private contractors to work on power restoration following the wind storm. Sayward residents can expect the outage to last well into Tuesday morning or later, as additional crews and equipment are assigned.

Sayward residents may notice that the BC Hydro website does not specifically list Sayward on its outages page, but the Sayward outage does show up under the Campbell River region.

Tips To Remember When Flying For Hunting

Thinking about bringing your hunting rifle on your next adventure?

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you plan to pack firearms, firearm parts, or ammunition in your checked luggage, you’ll need to get approval from your air carrier first. These items are strictly forbidden in carry-on baggage.
  • If you receive approval from your air carrier, make sure your firearms are unloaded and securely packed in a locked, hard-sided container.
  • Don’t forget to declare these items at the airport check-in counter.

Nanwakolas Council Presentation On Ioxiwe (Clam Gardens) – Webinar – November 7, 2024 at 10am

Loxiwe, or clam gardens, are an ancient and sophisticated mariculture technique developed by Indigenous Peoples of the Northwest Pacific Coast. By constructing rock walls, these communities significantly increase habitat and productivity for a variety of marine species, including butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) and littleneck clams (Protothaca staminea). Thus, loxiwe serve as both a sustainable food source for Indigenous communities and essential cultural production sites.

In this project, the Nanwakolas Council will collaborate with Indigenous knowledge holders, experts, community members, scientists, and marine managers to develop recommendations on incorporating Indigenous Knowledge into modern management of living archaeological sites, using loxiwe as an example. The project will be conducted in the core territory of the We Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum First Nations on Northern Quadra Island, off the coast of British Columbia.

Register for this upcoming webinar to hear from Christine Roberts, Weiwaikum Nation archaeologist, Shane Pollard, We Wai Kai – Cape Mudge First Nation Guardian Manager, and Charlene Everson, Nanwakolas Council Cultural Coordinator.
